The National Demolition Association (NDA) has selected The Berg Corporation as a 2022 NDA Excellence in Demolition Awards – Category 2 finalist for our WMATA Canopy Removal project.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Canopy Replacement project, located in Rockville, Maryland, consisted of the removal of three (3) 100′ by 40′ post tension concrete canopies from an elevated metro station platform each of which had cantilevered members in all four directions. Because of limits of the rail shutdown, the scope of work had to be completed with 21 calendar days, with liquidated damages imposed upon delays. The CSX rail lines located to the north of the WMATA metro lines were to remain active during the entire duration and the only available laydown space for all trades was the 1 acre parking lot to the south (adjacent to which was an active relocated bus stop for re routing pedestrians). Facing restrictions on disturbing the tracks below and strict schedule, this highly visible infrastructure project located in a dense, high net worth community was the focal point of WMATA’s seasonal renovations.
The Berg Corporation views this project as an inspiring organizational success given the internal collaboration needed to complete a project of this scale and complexity. We have received numerous recommendations by the general contractor and WMATA, as well as third party observers who were aware of the project. By the numbers, the project was also one of our best of the year and we were able to outperform on nearly every metric.
21 day schedule with 20 day performance
5000 man hour budget vs 3800 man hour billed
95 recycling rate
Outperformed budget by 25
True to its motto, Using Innovation to Create Opportunities, The Berg Corporation was able to use its technical knowledge and professional approach to remove the canopies in a safe and timely manner.
